Amanda Gorman’s poem on the deadly Ulvade Texas school shooting has gone viral.
After 19 children and two adults were fatally shot at a school in southwest Texas last week, Gorman posted a series of tweets just hours after the news broke. The poem reads:
Schools scared to death.
The truth is, one education under desks,
Stooped low from bullets;
That plunge when we ask Where our children
Shall live
& how
& if
It takes a monster to kill children. But to watch monsters kill children again and again and do nothing isn’t just insanity—it’s inhumanity. The truth is, one nation under guns. What might we be if only we tried. What might we become if only we’d listen.

Gorman posted the poem on Instagram as well, where she asked for donations to Everytown for Gun Safety with the caption:
“Americans—you know enough is enough. If you do anything today, let it not be just to grieve, but to act. Follow & donate to @everytown to help prevent gun violence and save lives, and check out their website (everytown.org) to take more action.”
Many were quick to comment on the post, encouraging Amanda to keep fighting the good fight, as well as users sharing their own experiences with guns.
“I said it after Sandy Hook and I’ll say it again: if the death of all those BABIES didn’t change hearts and minds, nothing will. Ironic how the state supposedly obsessed with protecting innocent lives is the new crime scene,” one user commented.
Followed by: “Rest in peace sweet angels, [you] were too pure [for] this world and now you can rest away from the horrible things that occur down here on Earth. You are and always will be missed???? Thank you Amanda for your beautiful words, these children and all the people lost before by gun violence are being honored by an amazing woman.”
As well as: “I was a child we kneeled in the hallways. We put our hands over our heads and face the cinderblock wall as a way to protect ourselves for a nuclear weapons drill. As long as we have weapons we will be afraid.”
