This St. Louis Mom-of-Six Gives Out Food to Hundreds of Needy Kids Every Day: ‘I Was Blessed Enough to Have a Little Spare Change’

Champale Anderson is a mom-of-six, but that didn’t stop her from helping hundreds of children in need.

Anderson, who lives in St. Louis, saw that many of the children in her neighborhood were going hungry and decided to take it upon herself to address the issue.

Meet Champale Anderson, Who Has Fed Hundreds of Needy Kids for the Last Five Years

“I’m always the one that kids come to whenever they’re in trouble, [when] they need somewhere to stay, I’m usually the one that they can come stay with,” Anderson told People.

In addition to packing up lunches for her six children, Anderson began packing up things like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit snacks, fruit, chips and cookies for hundreds of kids. Anderson has been helping feed community children for the past five years.

She began by putting together 15 bags, but now she estimates that around 130 kids stop by every day for some food. Anderson was paying out of pocket for the supplies, though following a local news story last year, she began receiving donations in support of her charitable work.

Anderson has taken the money – over $85,000 to date – and used it to expand her reach to other areas of St. Louis. She and her aunt and sister run Champ’s Teardrops, giving out food to kids in neighborhoods throughout St. Louis.

“So many of them, they come up to me and tell me that they really appreciate it, because a lot of people assume that the kids are suffering because parents maybe be on drugs or anything. It’s really not all about that,” Anderson said in the interview. “A lot of it is, but a lot of them just can barely pay their bills. Hell, I can barely pay mine, but I was blessed enough to have a little spare change left over to provide this.”

Anderson plans to continue her growing her outreach so that she can help as many children in need as possible.

“We have enough money in this world to provide this,” she continued. “If they can build new buildings, they can go buy bread and bologna and stuff for certain neighborhoods to help them. And that’s my goal. I want to reach everything.”
