John Mayer has received multiple threatening Instagram messages since his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift‘s rerelease of her 2012 studio album Red.
Following the rerelease of Red (Taylor’s Version) last week — and specifically, the rerelease of her single “All Too Well” on Friday, Swift’s exes have taken center stage on social media.
The new 10-minute version of the song, which is pointedly about her three-month-long romance with actor Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010.
In light of the song, fans quickly brought up Taylor’s other relationships that didn’t end well, notably Mayer.
To recap, John and Taylor were together for a few months back in December 2009. Taylor was just 19 years old at the time, while John was 32.
However, their relationship ended in February of 2010 and while neither confirmed nor denied the split, Taylor spoke through song with one particular track titled “Dear John” on her 2010 studio album, Speak Now.
A few years after its release, John addressed the song in an interview with Rolling Stone.
“It made me feel terrible,” he said. “It was a really lousy thing to do. I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off guard.”
“I will say as a songwriter that I think it’s kind of cheap songwriting,” he continued.

“I know she’s the biggest thing in the world, and I’m not trying to sink anybody’s ship, but I think it’s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, ‘Wait till he gets a load of this!’ That’s b*******.”
And so, with all the buzz around Jake, fans have begun to target Taylor’s other exes she didn’t end things on a good note with, notably Mayer.
While most fans made jokes about him in good fun, others took it too far and sent him death threats. Mayor responded to one particular message and screenshotted as well as shared the interaction with his fans and followers.
“Hi Alondra, it’s John. I’ve been getting so many messages like these the past couple of days, I decided to choose your message at random to reply to,” he wrote. “You can feel free to screenshot, share in any way you like if you want. I’m not upset, I just tend to have a curious mind and feel compelled to ask. Do you really hope that I die?” John wrote.
