Daniel Kaluuya Better Hope His Mom Has a ‘Sense of Humor’ After He Jokes About Parents Having Sex at the Oscars

Daniel Kaluuya likely has an uncomfortable conversation in store for him after he joked about his parents’ sex life while accepting an Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday night.

In a press appearance immediately following his win for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting, the Judas and the Black Messiah star said that his mom is “not going to be very happy” about the joke he made.

“My Mom, My Dad, They Had Sex — It’s Amazing!” Daniel Kaluuya Said While Accepting His Oscar.

In accepting his award for his portrayal of late Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton, Kaluuya thanked his mom, who participated in the ceremony remotely with his sister. Both were filmed watching from the UK.

“I’d like to thank my mom,” the actor said. “Thank you so much for pouring into me. You gave me everything, you gave me your factory settings so I could stand at my fullest height […] We gotta celebrate life!”

“We’re breathing, we’re walking. It’s incredible. Like, my mom, my dad, they had sex — it’s amazing! I’m here. I’m so happy to be alive and I’m gonna celebrate that tonight,” he added.

After the sex comment, the ceremony cut to a live shot of Kaluuya’s mother and sister who looked particularly uncomfortable. His sister doubled over in embarrassment, putting her face in her hands. “What is he talking about?” his mother appeared to say.

“Peace, love and onwards. We go again,” the actor concluded the colorful acceptance speech.

A reporter asked the Get Out star about the comment following his Oscar win. Specifically, about if he thinks the speech made a good enough impression to live on in viewers’ memories.

“Is that going to live on? I think that’s pretty obvious that all parents have sex, man, you know? What’s going on? It just came out my mouth, I know my mom’s probably going to text me some stuff, but here we are,” Kaluuya said in response.

A reporter followed up asking if he had spoken with his mother following his win and acceptance speech.

“No, bro, no, I’m gonna avoid my phone for a bit, mate, trust me, going to avoid my phone for a bit.”

“I think my mom’s not going to be very happy. But she’s gonna be cool, she’s gonna be cool, she’s gonna be cool,” he continued. “She’s got a sense of humor so she’s like we give it to each other, so it’s cool.”

We love that Kaluuya repeats “She’s gonna be cool” three times as if he is trying to speak that response into reality. Awkward speech or not, Daniel Kaluuya delivered an amazing performance in Judas and the Black Messiah. We are so happy to see the Academy recognize his immense talent.

This is Kaluuya’s first win and second nomination for an Academy Award after he was nominated for Best Lead Actor for his performance in 2018’s Get Out.

Fans of Kaluuya can find him next starring in the film adaptation of Femi Fadugba‘s YA, Sci-Fi thriller, The Upper World. The film will premier on Netflix.
