Tom Brady has six Super Bowl rings and is arguably the most famous football player in the country. But having strong athlete genes doesn’t necessarily mean his kids will follow in his footsteps. Much to Brady’s chagrin, apparently.
Brady recently opened up to Men’s Health about struggling to accept the fact that his son, Benny, 9, isn’t interested in sports. Brady has three children: Benny and Vivian, 6, whom he shares with wife Gisele Bündchen, and Jack, 12, whom he shares with ex Bridget Moynahan.
Brady shared that Jack “loves sports,” but Benny “likes different things.” Brady shared that he had assumed Benny would love sports, especially since Jack was so interested in them.
“When Benny came along, I thought he would be just like Jack,” Brady said. “So I was like, ‘C’mon, let’s do this.’ And he was like, ‘Nope.’ And I was like, ‘What? No, do this!’” Brady says Bündchen had to keep reminding him that not all kids are the same, saying “Would you effing understand that your son is different?”
He continued, “It was hard for me. I was like, ‘What do you mean? He’s a boy; he should do all these things I do.’ The reality is that Benny just likes different things.”
It’s not just Benny who isn’t into sports. Brady also shared that his wife isn’t into sports either. “She’s like a kite flying in the sky, and I’m kind of tethering her. Sometimes I have to hold on hard, but she knows I’m always there for her.”
We’re sympathetic to the fact that it’s sometimes hard for parents to understand that their kids have different interest. But on the other hand, it’s 2019; we’re way beyond “he’s a boy and therefore will love sports.” Let Benny do his thing and don’t love him any less for it.
The Men’s Health issue with Brady’s interview is on newsstands now.
