Kristen Stewart plays Princess Diana in the upcoming movie “Spencer,” and the resemblance is striking.
Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film will follow the late royal in December of 1991 and how her marriage to Prince Charles unravels.
Diana celebrates the Christmas holiday with the royal family at their Sandringham estate and over the course of one weekend decides to leave her husband.
Charles and Diana split in 1992 and formally divorced in 1996. And then in 1997, she tragically died in a car accident.
In a studio press release, principal photography for the film has begun in Germany and the U.K. It is expected to hit theaters in the fall of this year.
Stewart’s casting was announced in June of last year. Stewart, 30, is the same age as Diana at the time the movie takes place.
Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall and Sean Harris will be acting alongside Stewart.
“‘Spencer’ is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” said Stewart, in the release.
“It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
In the Netflix series, “The Crown” Emma Corrin portrayed Diana — which was released in November. For the next season, she will be replaced with Elizabeth Debicki.
Larraín also directed 2016’s Oscar-nominated “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
