A trio of teenagers recently pulled a prank at school that nearly cost their teacher her life. A 13-year-old girl and two 12-year-old boys smeared banana on the teacher’s door handle and pelted her with the fruit during a lesson, despite knowing that she is severely allergic to bananas.
The teacher had been very clear to the class that she was allergic to bananas, posting “banana free zone” signs outside of her classroom. She also asked students who had eaten a banana at lunch to wash their hands before coming into class.
As a result of the prank, the teacher went into anaphylactic shock within 15 minutes and didn’t respond after two EpiPen shots.
Though the incident occurred last fall, it recently made headlines after a local news organization began investigating the working conditions of local teachers.
A school security guard rushed to the scene and said to police, “She starts to change colors. They gave her one EpiPen. It wasn’t working. They gave her anotherher another EpiPen. Her throat was starting to close up.”
She was rushed to the local hospital after her colleagues called 911.
“All of the kids know she is deathly allergic to bananas,’ a staff member said. “If it touches her she will go into anaphylactic shock.”
“This could be attempted murder,” the security guard told police.
The incident happened at Starling K-8 school in Columbus, Ohio last fall. Local news station WSYX reported that there have been more than 30 assaults on teachers in the school districts in the past year.
