It’s nice to relate to a coworker who is going through the same mom struggles as you, but imagine if you were one of 36 colleagues who were expecting at the same time! That’s the reality at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
An astounding 36 Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICU) nurses are expecting or have delivered babies this year. Allison Ronco, a critical care education coordinator and nurse, appeared on Good Morning America to talk all things baby. “We always have a baby boom going on like this. For us, it is just our normal,” explained Allison. “Patients joke to not drink the water in this place unless you want to get pregnant.”

“We have an amazing support system. There is no shortage of parental advice among us.”
The incredible tribe of mamas is constantly on labor watch, as 21 babies have been already been born. Fun fact: Only two girls have been born so far!
If you’ve ever relied on the NICU for critical care, you know that these women are nothing short of heroic. Seeing as the Children’s Mercy Hospital is home to a Level IV NICU, the staff cares for the most complex infant cases in the Midwest.
“Most of us take our babies home as healthy babies, and to work where you help very sick babies gives you a different perspective and a whole new level of empathy,” shared Allison. “We do it because we love the babies.”
