A 3-year-old girl is dead after surviving a two-story fall, overnight — eventually succumbing to hypothermia after she was unable to get back inside her home.
Charlotte “Charlie” Handelman was found unconscious on Tuesday, January 19th, just outside a home in the 1500 block of 14½ Street in Rock Island, Illinois — according to the Rock Island Police Department.
Officials believe she fell from her second-story window at some point between the evening of January 18th night and early the next morning, January 19th.
She was discovered by her father, according to Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson.
Gustafson said Charlie suffered some bruising and skull fractures from the fall.

And while Charlie did survive the fall, she was later pronounced dead at a local hospital after teams worked “aggressively” to save her for more than two hours.
Her preliminary cause of death was hypothermia.
“At this time, we’re investigating it as nothing more than a very tragic accident,” Gustafson shared.

Gustafson states how the window in the girl’s room had been left cracked open to help cool down the warm house and how she had pushed it up further prior to falling.
Charlie’s death continues to be under investigation by the Rock Island Police Department.
