New reports reveal that several kids and teachers were injured during recess after two dogs got into the playground area and began attacking the group.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the students, who were in 5th and 6th grade, were playing outside Willard Intermediate South in an unfenced yard. The dogs were described as pit bull mixes.

At least 18 students and 3 teachers were injured during the attack. It’s believed that three teachers and three students sustained actual dog bites, while the other victims sustained injuries while attempting to flee the dogs.

Nearby school nurses provided immediate medical care before first responders arrived. The owners of the dogs were not able to provide vaccine records, but upon further testing, both dogs tested negative for rabies.

According to the Springfield News-Leader, both of the dogs were voluntarily surrendered and later euthanized.

Reports revealed that the school opted to have recess indoors the following day, which was the last day of school before winter break. Most of the students injured in the attack did return to school.
